Before & After Care
Before & aftercare January 20, 2025
this week
- Winter Break and snow days: We had so much fun over winter break! It was a good mix between kid led and teacher led activities. The kids loved making and playing with fake snow- one kid even built an igloo. I love seeing the kids’ leadership skills grow as they teach the rest of the class new games and continue to lead the games. It is so fantastic seeing these kids be comfortable enough to advocate for what they’d like to do and to be able to take charge when they get the chance. Some examples of this were when 2 kids were rolling a ball between their legs and I told them that they could make it a triangle. Before I knew it, the whole class was playing their own twist of this game together and were excited to be able to continue playing it when we went inside. Another time was when we started having a snowball fight. The kids started asking if we could play dodgeball rules with the snowball or if we could play head, shoulders, knees, toes, snowball. I’m so proud of these kids!
- Welcome Back: It’s been a crazy past few weeks. We hope that you’ve made some memories to last a lifetime. When it snows, I always remember when I was little and walked through deep snow with my family and when we went sledding.
- Winter: We have examples of winter activities throughout the room. When the boys saw the igloo examples in the lego station, they teased me for not including a minecraft example, which I had considered. The kids loved ice fishing at our science station.
NEXT WEEK
- China: I’m excited to teach the kids about China this week! We have so much fun learning about other countries every summer. One of my best friends from IU lives in Hong Kong, so I got to celebrate the lunar new year with him and eat some foods from his home country. I’m really looking forward to sharing my love of culture with the kids. The kids will even have the chance to learn how to write numbers. The paper plate hand fan and paper lantern examples look so cute!
- Keychains: We are working to make cross keychains for the church employees.
reminders
- 2 Hour Delay: When GCCS has a 2 hour delay, we are often open at regular time. The bus comes to pick the students up from St. Michael 2 hours later than usual. We submit our closings and delays to WLKY. More information about delays and closures was in the office newsletter.
- Energy Kits: The kids enjoyed watching a play before winter break. If we can get 75% of our families to sign up for a free energy kit, then we can earn another free play! I am already using my weather stripping from my kit on my front door. Please ask any loved ones who are Duke customers to order an energy kit at https://hehc.duke-energy.com/k12
